Do I need to change things?

De webshop verkoopt nog niet. Misschien heeft het tijd nodig? Een publiek ook. Of misschien moet ik veel meer online en Wi-Fi optimaal benutten om dit aan de man te brengen? Liever ben ik daar niet mee bezig. Maar misschien zijn de ontwerpen nog niet helemaal bruikbaar, afgezien van een of twee. Dit ontwerp is er een dat ik zeer bruikbaar vind:

Maar vaak merk ik dat ik gewoon begin en er dan iets ontstaat, soms een vreemde of onbruikbare vorm.

Een etui is af. En hoewel het niet de bedoeling was, heb ik een kleine handtas geproduceerd, ik werk er nog aan, het is bijna klaar. Het is bijzonder om te merken dat modellen vanzelf ontstaan hoewel het misschien handiger is om soms eerst een ontwerp te maken. Tot nu toe begin ik met een borduursel, ergens midden op een stuk stof en vanuit daar groeit een ontwerp. Dit is niet altijd superslim bedacht. Ik denk dat het handig is om eerst een ontwerp te maken en dan aan de slag te gaan zodat een etui niet uitgroeit tot tas, te groot of te lang of eigenlijk onbruikbaar word.

Deze werkwijze heb ik toegepast op een buideltasje voor wereldse fietsers, juist: een model voor mijzelf. Een handig beetje hippie modelletje. Jammer dat ik lukraak begonnen ben met shisha spiegelwerk en er vanzelf een ontwerp ontstond waarvan ik achteraf zie dat er niet over nagedacht is. Dat moet anders.

Ik kan nog steeds putten uit een verzameling stoffen en voorraad garens. Deze heb ik meegenomen van mijn reizen. De meeste garens komen uit Pakistan en de stoffen uit Nepal. Ik probeer niks te kopen, enkel te hergebruiken, er is al meer dan genoeg afval. Op het moment heb ik een jeans uit India aan stukken geknipt, deze heb ik jaren geleden gekocht in Puducherry. Eveneens laat ik me inspireren op spullen die ik gekocht heb tijdens mijn reizen, zo ben ik nu bezig met shisha spiegelwerk geïnspireerd op portemonnees uit Afghanistan.

Zou ik nu losgelaten worden in India dan zou ik heel anders inkopen, maar ik kocht alleen vanuit een drang om de creatieve lust tot bedaren te brengen. Minimaal dus. Dat moet ook wel wanneer je met alleen een rugzak reist. Wanneer je de wereld per fiets ervaart wordt het weer een heel ander verhaal, want elke gram tors je zelf, vooral berg op voel je.

Nu ga ik eens een schetsblok, potloden, liniaal, slijper en gum opdiepen om mee te nemen zodat ik doordacht kan gaan uitvoeren. Hoewel de volgende bestemming zich niet leent om in de buitenlucht uren te gaan borduren, maar inspiratie zal ik zeker in overvloed hebben.

Another pouch is finished. A small handbag is in process and almost done, although it was far from my intention to produce a handbag! It is surprising to note that models are developing itself although it might be more convenient to make a design first. So far, I start embroidering, somewhere in the middle of a piece of cloth and from there a design grows. This is not always super smart, as I have noticed with the handbag. I think it is useful to first create a design and then go to work so that a bag does not become too large or too long or basically unusable.

This process, I applied to a pouch for world cyclists, just a model for myself. A fun little groovy hippie example. Too bad that I started haphazardly with shisha mirror work, noticing that a design made in advance would have been better. I must change this method.

Here at home, I have a stock of fabrics and yarns I took from my travels. Most yarns come from Pakistan and fabrics from Nepal. I try not to buy anything, just reuse, as there is already too much garbage. Right now, I’ve cut a jeans from India to pieces, one that I bought years ago in Puducherry. I also get inspired by things that I bought on my travels, I am now working with inspired shisha mirror work on purses from Afghanistan.

Would I be in India right now; I would buy quite different. Back then, I bought out of a desire to calm the creativity. Minimal stuff, logical when traveling with only a backpack. When you experience the world by bicycle it’s yet another different story: every gram I haul up the hill is entirely up to myself.

Now I’m going to dig out a sketchbook, pencils, ruler, sharpener and eraser to take with me on my upcoming departure from here, so that I can continue performing. Although the next destination does not lend itself to embroider hours in the open air, inspiration will certainly flourish.
